How Belief in COVID-19 Conspiracy Theories Spread Faster Than the Pandemic
by Jon Scaccia March 7, 2025In August 2021, as the world was grappling with the Delta variant of COVID-19, another crisis was unfolding—this time, in the realm of information. A survey of over 10,000 Americans revealed a troubling truth: a significant portion of the population believed in alternative theories about the origins and purpose of the pandemic. These ranged from the plausible, like the lab leak theory, to the outright bizarre, such as the idea that 5G technology was to blame for the virus’s spread.
But these weren’t just fringe beliefs held by a few. Instead, they were part of a broader trend of misinformation that threatened to undermine public health initiatives, stall vaccination efforts, and sow division in communities already struggling to navigate a once-in-a-lifetime health crisis.
Why Do Conspiracy Theories Thrive?
Conspiracy theories often find fertile ground in times of crisis. When fear, uncertainty, and rapid change dominate the narrative, people naturally seek explanations. However, not all explanations are created equal. While scientific research offers methodical and evidence-based answers, alternative theories often provide simple and emotionally satisfying solutions. This study found that younger, male, less-educated, and lower-income individuals were more likely to subscribe to such beliefs. Political and religious leanings also played a significant role, with unvaccinated, right-leaning, and religious individuals showing higher levels of agreement with these theories.
The Role of Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword
One of the most powerful predictors of conspiracy belief was the perceived reliability of social media. Those who trusted platforms like Facebook and Twitter were significantly more likely to endorse alternative theories. While social media has the potential to disseminate accurate information quickly, it also serves as a breeding ground for misinformation. Algorithms designed to keep users engaged often promote sensational and polarizing content, which can amplify conspiracy narratives.
In contrast, trust in traditional sources such as national health experts, the CDC, and the World Health Organization (WHO) was associated with lower acceptance of these beliefs. This finding underscores the importance of credible, transparent communication from official sources—especially during a crisis.
Real-World Consequences: How Beliefs Impact Public Health
The impact of conspiracy beliefs is not just theoretical. During the COVID-19 pandemic, misinformation led to resistance against mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination campaigns. In extreme cases, it contributed to violence against healthcare workers and public health officials. The study’s findings suggest that countering these beliefs requires more than just presenting facts—it involves rebuilding trust and engaging communities through credible voices they already respect.
What’s Next? Addressing the Misinformation Epidemic
Public health organizations, governments, and media outlets need to adopt a multi-pronged approach to combat misinformation. Strategies could include:
- Partnering with Community Leaders: The study found that trust in community and religious leaders was a strong predictor of belief in conspiracy theories. By working with trusted local voices, public health messages may be more effective. A separate evaluation I (Jon_) was involved in showed that local authorities were the most trusted when it comes to health messaging.
- Improving Media Literacy: Teaching people how to evaluate the credibility of information sources can reduce the impact of sensationalist or misleading content.
- Emphasizing Transparency: When public health guidelines change—as they did with mask mandates—clear communication about why decisions are made can help maintain trust.
