The integration of nature-based interventions in healthcare facilities is emerging as a promising strategy to enhance both human health and biodiversity. A recent study conducted in Belgium offers a detailed exploration of this innovative approach, providing a framework to guide the design, implementation, and evaluation of these interventions. This blog delves into the study’s findings and the potential impact of nature-based interventions on healthcare.

What are Nature-Based Interventions?

Nature-based interventions (NBIs) are activities that promote health and well-being through interaction with nature. These interventions range from simple exposure to nature, such as garden walks, to more structured activities like sensory stimulation and gardening. NBIs aim to leverage nature’s therapeutic benefits, which have been well-documented to include improvements in mental, social, and physical health.

The Need for a Quality Framework

As the practice of integrating nature into healthcare settings grows, so does the need for a structured approach to ensure these interventions are effective and sustainable. The Belgian study aimed to address this gap by developing a quality framework based on interviews with professionals from seven healthcare facilities.

And yes, we know that frameworks are like toothbrushes…..

Methodology

The study utilized a qualitative interview approach, engaging 22 professionals involved in nature-based interventions across various healthcare settings. The interviews were analyzed to refine a preliminary quality framework, leading to the identification of nine quality criteria necessary for successful nature-based interventions.

Key Findings

The study identified nine essential quality criteria, including:

  • Needs Analysis: Understanding the needs of users and the natural environment.
  • Goal Setting: Establishing clear objectives for the intervention.
  • Process and Impact Evaluation: Regularly assessing the intervention’s effectiveness.
  • Use of Evidence-Based Practices: Integrating scientific research into the design and implementation.
  • Transdisciplinary Collaboration: Fostering cooperation between healthcare and nature management professionals.
  • Capacity Building: Ensuring continuous training and resource allocation.
  • Structural Design: Creating accessible and sustainable natural spaces.
  • Role of Professionals: Defining the competencies required for those involved.
  • Quality of Interaction with Nature: Ensuring meaningful and beneficial interactions with nature.

The study emphasized the importance of a cyclical, adaptive process for implementing nature-based interventions. This involves continuous monitoring and adjustment based on regular evaluations. The quality framework developed provides a checklist that healthcare facilities can use to guide the implementation of nature-based interventions.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons:

Bridging Healthcare and Nature Management: The integration of healthcare and nature management requires a transdisciplinary approach. The framework developed in this study facilitates this integration, promoting collaboration between professionals from both fields.

Promoting Evidence-Based Practices: The framework emphasizes the use of evidence-based practices, ensuring that nature-based interventions are grounded in scientific research, enhancing their credibility and effectiveness.

Supporting Sustainable Healthcare: Nature-based interventions improve human health and contribute to biodiversity restoration. This dual benefit supports the broader goal of sustainable healthcare, aligning with global initiatives like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

In conclusion, nature-based interventions represent a transformative approach in healthcare, merging the benefits of nature with medical care to foster holistic well-being. By adopting the quality framework proposed in this study, healthcare facilities can ensure that their nature-based interventions are both effective and sustainable, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more biodiverse world.
